Potty Talk

Filed under: uncraftiness — by michellew @ 1:50 pm

I’m finally starting to get sick of changing diapers and think I’m ready to start taking potty training seriously.  Alice is very interested and will ask to use the potty, so I want to take advantage when she’s interested.  Caleb on the other hand, just isn’t interested.  We just had the following conversation where he used one of my phrases I use with the kids when they constantly pester with the why question.

“Caleb aren’t you ready to stop having owies on your bottom and use the potty?”
“But what about your big boy underwear, don’t you want to wear your Thomas underwear?”
“But Liam, Owen, Charlie, Oliver and Abel all use the potty!”
“So why don’t you want to use the potty?”
“Mama, I don’t know, that’s just the way it is!”

Cracked me up.  Any potty tips? (we do M&Ms if he tries)

  1. I got _The No-Cry Potty Solution_ by Elizabeth Pantley, worth a check-out from your library. I remember its having a lot of great ideas; but what I mostly gleaned from it was that we are not ready yet (which is okay since he’s just 2) even though he occasionally has fun doing it. (So i can’t remember a lot of the ideas) I liked the approach: we are going to do this, but in a way that’s not a fight. know what I mean?

  3. First… His response was HILARIOUS!! LOL! =) I definitely cracked up when I read it. too funny!
I know I’ve told you what my doc said… …”they are ready when they’re ready. It usually doesn’t help to push them and it makes the process a lot longer when they really aren’t ready. For boys, something just seems to “click” one day.” I originally thought, “something just clicks?, really?” I wasn’t a believer, until the day Julian just started going. I did the M&M incentive, but that’s about it. They always sat for me too, so that was a plus. My doc did suggest a sticker board to earn something. Maybe a sticker board and then he gets to pick a toy at the dollar store? Good luck!

  4. That is hilarious! I love the phrases that they come up with.
Ethan wasn’t potty trained until 3 months before he turned 3. I tried earlier and he just didn’t get the concept yet. Then I tried after Jude was born because I was sick of all the diapers and it clicked with him. I gave him salty snacks and lots of drinks and set him on the potty in front of a video that he picked out. I don’t know if it was the method that helped him figure it out but it did help with identifying the sensation of going potty. We also did the sticker chart and M&M or skittles. He didn’t care so much for the stickers but the candy worked. And for #2 we did fruit roll-ups because that was a huge incentive for him.
